Deactivated.DimensionsDiameter: 3.563 in. (9.1 cm)Historical NotesThis 6 lb. case shot was one of 1,400 cannonballs unearthed by a contractor during construction at the site of the Allegheny Arsenal in Lawrenceville in the spring of 1972. All of the cannonballs were unused and live. The U.S. Army stepped in, confiscated the cannonballs and shipped them to the Picatinny Arsenal in Dover, New Jersey. In July 1974, several of the deactivated cannonballs were sent to various Pittsburgh institutions, including Soldiers and Sailors and the History Center. Donor Margery McInerney's father, Charles A. McInerney, was the Director of the Pittsburgh and Allegheny County Crime Laboratory in 1972 and was involved with the discovery of the cannonballs. At his request, the U.S. Army sent him this 6 lb. case shot as a memento.
