Historical NotesThese cannonballs (spherical case shot) were discovered in 1972 by a contractor during construction in Lawrenceville. A total of 1,400 were unearthed and all were unused and live. The U.S. Army stepped in, confiscated the cannonballs and shipped them to the Picatinny Arsenal in Dover, New Jersey. Some were cut in half to show the inside. Finally, in July 1974, several of the deactivated cannonballs were sent to various Pittsburgh institutions, including Soldiers and Sailors and the History Center. Found in collection.
