Historical NotesThis framed picture of Jesus was brought to America by the Mastroianni family of Nocera Terinese, Italy. They traveled on the Flotta Lauro – Roma in 1956, first landing in Bentleyville, Pennsylvania where they stayed with Maria Cario Mastroianni’s uncle, Antonio Cario, and his family. The glass in the frame was broken during the voyage and Lorenzo Mastroianni, Maria's husband, repaired the damage. The Mastroianni's moved onto Cleveland and hung the picture in their home. We took this piece because we do not have many examples of religious devotionals brought from the Old World by migrants. This framed picture also allows us to tell the story of the Cario farm in Bentleyville, which was a launching pad for many members of the extended Cario family that settled in the United States.
