Historical NotesFaux fur coat from Jonasson's owned by Iris Przybylek. This short faux fur coat was purchased by the donor sometime between 1954- early 1960s at Jonasson’s Departent Store (Meyer Jonasson & Co), located at Liberty and Oliver, while she worked as a secretary downtown at the A. E. Maston Co. Most days, she ate a very quick lunch and used most of her lunch hour to shop for clothes and gifts downtown, and Jonasson’s was her favorite store because of their focus on women’s fine and on-trend fashions. The short cloak represents a later example of a coat from a downtown fashion retailer not currently well-represented in our collection aside from some earlier 19th century pieces. Jonasson’s was known for women’s wear and especially fashion lines from NYC. They became especially known in the 1950s for their lines of furs and coats. They first opened in Pittsburgh in 1899 at Liberty and Sixth Avenue before moving to Liberty and Oliver in 1909.
