Historical NotesThis fireman's dress hat was worn by John William "Doc" Baine, who was a charter member/volunteer fireman at Universal Fire Station (VFD #16) in the 1920s. The fire station was located in Universal, PA. John William "Doc" Baine (born February 8, 1887) was a native of Clarksville, PA (now known as Universal, PA). He married Sarah Jane McNamara in 1903. Both John and Sarah descended from some of the earliest settlers in Penn Township. Baine was employed at the Universal Atlas Cement Company, which gave the town its current name. He was also a member of the local Moose Lodge. He died on December 16, 1943 at the age of 66.
