Historical NotesThis sign is from the Louise Home for Babies. In 1904, the Young Women’s Guild of the Christ Methodist Episcopal Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was organized to help care for children awaiting adoption. Subsequently, Mrs. Werman A. Lewis was chosen as the organization’s first president. The original location was a three-room establishment at the Salvation Army Home on Webster Avenue in Pittsburgh. Later that same year, they formed the Babies Day Nursery in the “Captain Wood” house in the West End. Four years later, the home, known simply as “The Guild House” was moved to 946 Beech Street in Allegheny. In 1918, Mr. J. C. McDowell donated the property at 336 South Aiken Avenue and about this time the organization was renamed Louise Home for Babies. The organization was named in memory of the donor’s adopted daughter, Louise Root Diescher, who died in childbirth. In 1956, the organization closed and reopened that same year as the Louise Child Care Center (LCCC).
