Historical NotesBeth Shalom Congregation of East Liverpool, Ohio, was created in 1963 through the merger of B’nai Israel Temple (an earlier Reform congregation founded largely by German immigrants) and B’nai Jacob Synagogue (a later Orthodox congregation founded largely by Eastern European immigrants). Although located in Ohio, Beth Shalom and the other communal institutions in East Liverpool attracted members from nearby Midland, PA, and Chester, WV, and the congregation maintained relationships with regional organizations based in Pittsburgh. The local B’nai B’rith lodge in East Liverpool was founded no later than 1919. It was later renamed in honor of Gustav Bendheim, an early leader in the Jewish community, particularly in Reform contingent. The East Liverpool chapter of Hadassah was founded no later than 1924. The tablecloth was prepared by the Sisterhood of B’nai Jacob but, according to anecdotal evidence, was used at the merged congregation.
