Historical NotesCameo Doll Company was founded in 1922 by Joseph Kallus in New York. In 1932 the company moved to Port Allegheny in Northwestern PA. In 1970 the company moved to Chicago after being taken over by the Strombecker Corporation. Cameo dolls are known for being high quality. They are best known for their Kewpie dolls designed by illustrator Rose O’Neill. The 1960s Cameo Plum dolls were 18 or 24" tall and had vinyl head jointed only at the neck with one piece latex body with two squeakers, one in the stomach and one in the backside (apparently for spanking and hugging). They had molded painted hair, sleep eyes, and mouths that opened and closed.
