Historical NotesPart of a collection of artifacts that document the downtown location of Kaufmann’s (became Macy’s) department store. This large collection of items was field gathered from the downtown location of Macy’s (formerly Kaufmann’s) after the store’s final closing was announced in the fall of 2015. Items were collected by HHC staff and the downtown Macy’s staff from throughout all of the building’s thirteen floors and include materials that document multiple aspects of the store’s operation, such as advertising and promotional items, some Christmas window display material, design and product placement, store packaging, photographs, employee services and support, multiple restaurants with special emphasis on the Tic Toc café and the Arcade Bakery, maintenance materials, and display props as well as other seasonal Christmas decorations and Holiday Parade costumes. Some store fixtures and large items were also taken, including an exterior original Kauffmann’s wall plaque, chairs from the building’s beauty salons, a table set from the Tic Toc Cafe, a water fountain, and some interior wall signage. Most of this material relates to the store’s many years as Kaufmann’s although a few items do document the transformation that occurred in 2006, when Macy’s retired the Kaufmann’s name and rebranded the store under their own name.
