DescriptionWhite coated metal WWII air raid warden helmet with circular blue sticker on the front featuring a white triangle in the middle with diagonal red stripes. The helmet had a rounded top and steeply curved sides which flare out at the bottom to make a brim two inches wide around the helmet. Three fasteners on the front and three on the back connect to the interior structure of fabric straps and supports. Blue/white/grey straps form supports on the interior of the helmet with a brown leather strap on the front.Dimensions5.5 x 12 x 13 in. (14 x 30.5 x 33 cm)InscriptionsOn underside is a red stamp which reads: "PROPERTY OF THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT / OFFICE OF / CIVILIAN / DEFENSE / (PGH)".
Historical NotesCivil Defense air raid warden helmet. Both donor Ruth Vogel Redenbaugh’s father John G. Vogel and grandfather Fred Schueler were air raid wardens in the North Side during World War II. The donor’s grandfather Fred Schueler, a Westinghouse retiree, was the sector warden for Zone 14, Sector 1, Post 7 in the North Side. He was given the position of sector warden because he was retired and able to stay at home.
