Historical NotesCarnegie Steel Company bell used to call the board meetings to order when Isaac Lamont Hughes (donor Harriet Naser's uncle) was president of the company from 1930 until Carnegie Steel merged with Illinois Steel and became Carnegie-Illinois Steel in 1935. He became Vice President of Carnegie-Illinois for a short while before taking over as Secretary of Pennsylvania Department of Highways. He began his career in steel in 1897 at the Edgar Thompson Works in Braddock, Pennsylvania. Carnegie Steel was the largest subsidiary company of United States Steel when it formed in 1901.Label TextI. Lamont Hughes used this brass bell to call meetings to order when he was the President of Carnegie Steel Company in the 1930s. At this point Carnegie Steel was one of the many steel subsidiaries that made up the United States Steel Corporation. In 1936 Carnegie Steel merged with Illinois Steel to become Carnegie-Illinois Steel Company. Hughes had started in the steel business in 1897 at the Edgar Thompson Works in Braddock, working his way to a top management position.
