Historical NotesThe Historical Society of Western Pennsylania purchased this painting in November of 1938 from Elizabeth B.M. Denny. James Ross was a lawyer who represented Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate from 1794 to 1803. During the Whiskey Rebellion President George Washington appointed him to negotiate with the rebels, successfully defusing the situation without violence.
