Historical NotesJoseph Horne’s Department store sign that hung on the outside of the downtown store, some are still on the building today. Max & Erma’s is a national restaurant chain with locations around Pittsburgh, one of the first being in the Gimbel’s department store downtown. The Ohio-based company spread throughout the region on the 1980s and 1990s after starting a chain in 1972 based on the original Columbus, Ohio restaurant. The stores are covered in local memorabilia, some reproduced and some original. The South Hills location has been there since 1990, and closed in 2016. This Joseph Horne’s Department store sign was used in the restaurant as decoration.
