Historical NotesTerrible Towel carried by Will Cross when he summited Mount Everest on May 22, 2006. A type-1 diabetic since childhood, Cross has become a world-class mountain climber. In addition to training for the incredible physical demands of mountain climbing, Will has also learned to manage his diabetes in the most unlikely of places. In an amazing four-year effort, he completed the NovoLog Peaks and Poles Challenge by climbing the highest mountain on each of the seven continents and crossing both the North and South Poles. Cross concluded the Challenge by summiting Nepal’s Mount Everest in 2006. With this feat, he became the first American, and Pittsburgher, with diabetes to scale the world’s tallest mountain. The towel was made to commemorate the Pittsburgh Steelers win at Super Bowl XL on February 6, 2006.
