Back has handwritten graphite note along one side "flag worn During / Spanish War".
Historical NotesFlag was carried by Hezekiah Nixon Duff through the Spanish American War. Hezekiah Nixon Duff was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on March 15, 1876. He graduated from Western University of Pennsylvania, now University of Pittsburgh, with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Law and worked as an editor for the Pittsburgh Leader newspaper. Duff was a Private in Hampton-Battery B and fought in the Spanish-American War in 1898. After returning home, he married Sarah Lindsay and moved to Michigan. In Michigan, Duff worked for various newspapers and magazines. From 1929-1930, he served as the National Commander in Chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Hezekiah Nixon Duff died on April 29, 1949, and was interred in Union Dale Cemetery located in Pittsburgh's North Side.
