(6.4 x 22.9 cm)Historical NotesPart of a collection from James Wilson Devitt's career with the Pittsburgh Police. Devitt was part of the Pittsburgh Police from approximately 1940 through 1972 eventually obtaining the rank of Lieutenant of the Vice Squad. Previous to joining the force he served in the army from 1935 to 1937 and again from 1943 to 1946 when he was drafted for WWII. Born in February of 1914, he grew up in the Hill District where his father owned a produce wagon. He would use the incline to bring his produce down to the Strip where he sold it. Devitt was a Cadillac journeyman mechanic before joining the police force. He met his wife around 1938 and they had three children. He retired from the police in 1972.
