Historical NotesGas mask used by Timothy Regan, Sr., a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native. He was 21 years old on June 20, 1916, when he enlisted as a private in the Machine Gun Company, 18th Pennsylvania Infantry (Duquesne Greys). His company was assigned to the Mexican border where it served in a raid on Pancho Villa, until it was mustered out of service in 1917. Private Regan remained with his regiment when it was mobilized into service for the war with Germany as the 111th Infantry, 28th Division. He is listed as having been AWOL from February 18, 1918 to March 7, 1918. Regan was promoted to Sergeant on November 7, 1918. He served with the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) in France (May 5, 1918 to April 27, 1919), in the advance on Ourcq and Vesle (July 28, 1918 to September 7, 1918), and the Thiaucourt Sector (October 20, 1918 to November 11, 1918). He sustained gas burns on September 25, 1918. He was honorably discharged on May 13, 1919. Mr. Regan was very active in the 111th Infantry Veterans Association, and also served on the executive committee of the Society of the 28th Division, AEF. He served as chair of the draft board in Hazelwood during WWII. Mr. Regan died in 1965.
