Label TextIn the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the designer came to have an increasingly important role in the development of new glass product lines. Reuben Haley, who had worked as a factory superintendent at U.S. Glass before establishing his own design business in Beaver, Pa., had a major impact on the glass made at the Phoenix and Consolidated factories. Inspired by the work of Rene Lalique and the Art Moderne movement, Haley developed a series of art glass lines produced by these two regional companies. When the Historical Society began actively collecting glass in the 1950s, curators concentrated on acquiring glass from the late 18th and 19th centuries. In preparation for the exhibition Glass: Shattering Notions, the museum actively pursued and collected the glass made in this region in the past 100 years. A number of local and national collectors clubs have both donated to this effort and provided funds for purchases.
