Historical NotesBeginning in the 1920s, the lamps were made by the Edison Storage Battery Company in conjunction with Mine Safety Appliances Company. The flameless safety lamp greatly reduced the risk of explosions by ridding mines of the earlier open-flame lamps. The R4 model was introduced in 1949.
