Historical NotesThis rasp is from a set of combmaker's tools August Schneider brought from Germany in 1865 and used to make horn and shell combs. Schneider was born in Bayonne, Germany in 1845, opened a shop at the corner of 38th and Butler Streets in 1870 which sold mostly shoes and boots, and died in 1923. Transfer from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in 1994, donated by August Schneider's family 6/19/1980.Label TextAugust Schneider brought this kit of tools with him from Germany and used them in the making of horn and shell combs. He had a shop, advertising “boots, shoes and gaiters” in Pittsburgh in the 1870-1880s and died in the 1920s.
