Historical NotesWallpaper buck used to hold rolls of wallpaper at the Fairman Wallpaper & Painting Company. George Fairman escaped from a third term in the Russian army and found his way with his wife Sarah to Pittsburgh in 1904. By 1916, the couple, with their three young children, opened a wallpaper store on Fullerton Street. In 1923, they expanded the store; in 1932, Sarah died and George's sons took over the business, naming it Fairman Wallpaper and Paint Company. George remarried seven years later. In 1957, the Fullerton store was moved to Fifth Avenue to make way for the new Civic Arena and in the 1980s, the store's name was changed to Fairman Wall and Window Coverings. The stand was created by the Howe Scale Company, a scale and weighing instruments production company in Vermont.
