Historical NotesPrecision balance. This balance was used by Thomas Jack while he was a technician in Alcoa's research laboratories. Jack ran the mass spectrometer at the Alcoa labs. This machine was state of the art at the time of its purchase. Alcoa has always emphasized research and development, and so when the machine became outdated it was replaced and Jack gave it to donor Victor D. Dozzi. The single pan balance replaced this double pan, equal-arm balance. The balance was made by W. Ainsworth & Sons and was distributed by Fischer-Scientific Company of Pittsburgh. Donor Victor D. Dozzi used this balance in his jewelry business before donating to the Heinz History Center.
