Historical NotesMacy’s Christmas elf parade costume. Part of a collection of artifacts that document the downtown location of Kaufmann’s (became Macy’s) department store. This large collection of items was field gathered from the downtown location of Macy’s (formerly Kaufmann’s) after the store’s final closing was announced in the fall of 2015. Label TextParade, the Santa Pageant, the Civic Christmas Parade, or My Macy’s Holiday Parade, it always marked the start of the Christmas shopping season. The parade’s route has also changed through the years. In the 1930s, participants gathered on the North Side near Boggs & Buhl, then crossed the Sixth Street Bridge to bring Santa into downtown Pittsburgh. In the 1960s, the parade started near the Civic Arena and ended at Gateway Center. Today, it starts on Liberty Avenue in the Strip District and ends on Fifth Avenue downtown. Kaufmann’s sponsored the Thanksgiving Day parade in the 1960s, then the Holiday parade from 1980 until 2006, when it became the “My Macy’s Holiday Parade.” Macy’s sponsorship ended in 2013. Local NBC-TV station WPXI has broadcast the parade since the 1980s.
