DescriptionBlack taffeta, long-sleeved opera coat. Thick, round collar with black chiffon ruffle, over an embroidered and lace decoration; embroidery used brown thread. Similarly decorated flap, which lays across shoulders, off of collar; black satin ribbon under flap to a bow behind neck. Sleeves flare at angled cuffs; same decoration with lace loosely hanging from hem. Black metal hooks from collar down front, at which point front angles out. Lace hangs loosely on bottom hem.Dimensions20 x 45.625 in. (50.8 x 115.9 cm)
Historical NotesOpera coat worn by Susan Melinda Lowry Benney (1858-1935). Susan Melinda Lowry was born in Somerset County, Pennsylvania in 1856. She married Charles A.R. Benney of the 4th Ward of Pittsburgh about 1876. She had three children: Alice (1878-1934), Robert (1883-1967), and Charles Francis (1888-1938). Susan lived in Oakland for a large part of her life; she passed away in 1935.
