Historical NotesRetailer: PittsburghLabel TextThe influences for some glass designs are hundreds, even thousands of years old. The use of a dolphin or a serpent can be traced back to Roman statuary from the second century A.D. This dolphin candlestick, made in 1860, owed its popularity to a revival of interest in ancient art. The dolphin pattern appeared first in furniture and ceramics, and later in glass. Glass companies in both New England and Western Pennsylvania made use of the dolphin design as stems for candlesticks and compotes.
