Historical NotesPittsburgh Spirit jersey of Stanislaw Terlecki. The Pittsburgh Spirit soccer team was one of the original six teams in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL). They played from 1978 to 1986, but suspended operation for the 1980-1981 season. At the time their average attendance was around 6351 for the regular season and 7117 for the playoffs, which was more than the Penguins. They usually made the playoffs, but never won a championship. Stan Terlecki came from playing for the Polish national team for the 1981-82 season and played one additional season before transferring teams, he then returned for the 84-85 season. He had been forced off of the Polish team for his anti-communist views, he eventually returned to Poland and played club soccer, but was not allowed to play for the national team. He won MVP his first year with the Spirit and was on the all-star team. The indoor soccer league was the inspiration for the eventual Arena Football League.
