Historical NotesPatrolman Julius P. Kmak and Ben Polumbi were the founding members of the Pittsburgh Police's K-9 Unit which was established on November 17,1958. The Police Canine badge is awarded to the dog's handler and dog upon completion of an intensive training regime at the training academy. Dogs are not given a badge or considered a Police K-9 until they have successfully completed the 3-4 month program and have proven their proficiency. The badges are worn on the dogÆs collar while working and are only taken off when they are kenneled. Part of the Pittsburgh Police Historical Association collection.
