Historical NotesSteelerette Uniform worn by Patricia Tanner, who was a Steelerette from 1965-1968. The Pittsburgh Steelerettes were the first cheerleaders in the NFL, forming in 1961 when the Steelers played at Forbes Field, and folding in 1969, when the team moved to Three Rivers Stadium. The cheerleaders were students from Robert Morris Junior College (now Robert Morris University) and were chosen based on appearance, coordination, gymnastic ability, and personality. They also had to maintain a 2.0 grade point average. In all, nearly sixty women were Steelerettes. The 1969-1970 football season was the last for the Steelerettes. In addition to the "look" becoming outdated, Robert Morris had its own football team, complete with cheerleaders, and interest in the Steelerettes had diminished. Students seemed to be more interested in school related events and less interested in cheering for a professional team.
