Historical NotesPeruvian coffee maker used for making cafe pasado, a dark concentrated type of coffee popular in Peru. The top of the machine is filled with ground coffee and packed tightly. Boiling water is poured through the top. This moistens the coffee, and some water eventually drips through the grounds into the holding basin. After it is done, it is served by adding some of the concentrated coffee into a cup filled with hot water -- more or less depending on one's taste for stronger or weaker coffee. The coffee maker was purchased and used by donor Patricia Documet's mother in Lima, Peru. It was later brought to Pittsburgh by Patricia Documet, an immigrant from Peru, and used in her office at the University of Pittsburgh.Label TextPeruvian-born Patricia Documet, a professor at the University of Pittsburgh, used this coffee maker to make café pasado. A traditional drink in Peru, café pasado is made by adding boiling water to the top of the pot and giving it time to slowly pass through a filter containing ground coffee. The highly concentrated coffee is then mixed with a cup of hot water and served. The coffee pot was brought from Peru to Pittsburgh by Documet’s mother.
