Historical NotesThis rasp is part of a set of combmaker's tools August Schneider brought from Germany in 1865. He used them to make horn and shell combs. Schneider was born in Bayonne, Germany in 1845 and opened a shop at the corner of 38th and Butler Streets in 1870 which sold mostly shoes and boots. He died in 1923. Donated to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History by August Schneider's family on 6/19/1980, transferred to the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania in 1994. Label TextAugust Schneider brought this kit of tools with him from Germany and used them in the making of horn and shell combs. He had a shop, advertising “boots, shoes and gaiters” in Pittsburgh in the 1870-1880s and died in the 1920s.
