DescriptionPair of wooden crutches. Single stick base with beveled edges attached to a flat U-shaped arm rest. White painted writing on one side of each arm rest.Inscriptions"Presented by / C.H. Miersch" painted along side of one crutch, and "62 Reg't Penn, Vol. Company A" printed along side of the other crutch.

Historical NotesPart of the Carnegie Transfer. Originally donated by Mr. H. D. Miersch, June 26 1903. Crutches were given to Mr. Miersch at Fortress Monroe in 1862 after battle of Maines Mill. Handwritten donor card reads "62 Regt. Penn. Vol. Company A"Label TextPrivate Curtis H. Miersch [Company A] of the 62nd Pennsylvania Volunteers used these crutches after receiving a serious wound at the 1862 Battle of Gaines’ Mill. Miersch recovered at a hospital near Fort Monroe, Va., but brought the crutches home to Allegheny County.
