InscriptionsText along bottom edge on front, from left to right: red illegible handwritten text that is partially cutoff; black stamped text "COLOR DEPT."; black printed and handwritten text in bottom right corner "PITTSBURGH PRESS ROTO / FOR NOV 23-58".
Back has adhesive masking tape around the perimeter. Handwritten in graphite along top edge is "446 - Clean QUOTE"; at top center are numbers; in bottom left is "H-146S / Eat to clean & var / Should it be / varnished" (this is an educated guess as the handwriting is difficult to read); and in the bottom right is "18 ¼ x 22 ¼ / GREY / GESSO" (this text has lines drawn over it).
MarksOne whole and two partial printed manufacturer marks with text "CRESCENT / ILLUSTRATION BOARD / Cold Press Surface / No. 100 / Heavyweight / A Product of / CHICAGO CARDBOARD COMPANY".
Historical NotesTransferred from the Civil War Trust. Nat Youngblood was an artist from Indiana who moved to Pittsburgh after WWII. He was the art director of the Pittsburgh Press for 30 years. He painted many images of Western Pennslyvania history. He passed away in 2009. See 2014.18 object file for Nat Youngblood's obituary. According to his obituary, while working for the Pittsburgh Press, Nat Youngblood "regularly produced mini-masterpieces for the cover of Roto, and then Family Magazine, both Sunday magazine supplements to the paper ... Ralph Bren, former Press managing editor, wrote 500-word essays to accompany the paintings."
