DescriptionGood Conduct military medal. Red ribbon with three white vertical stripes on both proper left and right sides; bronze medal hanging from loop at bottom of ribbon. Embossed text on front of medal in outer circle; image of eagle standing on a sword and book in middle. On backside of medal: a five-pointed star and a scroll between text, surrounded by a wreath formed by a laurel branch on the proper right and an oak branch on the proper left. Engraved on scroll is awardee's name. Dimensions1.375 x 2.625 in. (3.5 x 6.7 cm)InscriptionsEmbossed on medal: "EFFICIENCY HONOR FIDELITY" in outer circle.
On backside of medal: "FOR GOOD / CONDUCT",

Historical NotesSamuel Schwartz was born January 12, 1925, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Before joining the Army, he was manager at a retail liquor store. Schwartz began active service in the U.S. Army in November 1942. During his time fighting in World War II, he was awarded three military honors: the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Ribbon, and the World War II Victory Ribbon; he was never injured in battle. In February 1946, he was given an Honorable Discharge. Samuel Schwartz died on December 28, 1992 and is buried in Kether Torah Cemetery, Pittsburgh.
