DescriptionEnsemble consisting of yellow sweater and denim jeans. (a) Yellow cotton sweater. Long sleeves. High neck. Ribbed shoulders and sleeves. Metal zipper down neck to top of chest. Labels in collar. (b) Denim jeans, bell bottoms. Dark blue. Embroidered designs in brown, yellow and white on pant leg sides, along slits that are laced with brown leather. Proper right leg: tiger applique with fourteen glass jewels; proper left leg: circular patch, multi-colored embroidery with image of a muscular arm and related text.DimensionsMeasured laying flat. Historical NotesOutfit worn by hairstylist Alfred "Deano" Dean. Dean normally added patches and/or appliques to most of his denim. On October 22, 1926, Dean was born in Herron Hill. He moved to New York where he graduated from beauty school, but eventually returned to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to be with his father. In the mid-1970s, he became the first African American hairstylist at the salon in Horne's Department Store. Dean was known for his incredible sense of style and his talent with a curling iron, breaking through racial barriers and creating hair styles for both white and black women. After Horne's closed, Dean opened a salon on the Boulevard of the Allies called Izzazu. He died on January 12, 2010, due to complications with prostate cancer.
