DescriptionFoundry maquette. Cast plaster, with reinforcing fiber matrix, painted overall to resemble patinated bronze. Rectangular slab shape, with beveled edges. Upper field features a high-relief bust of Coach Fletcher, wearing a ball cap with upturned brim. Relief cut lettering is set against an embossed pebble finish background. Dimensions30.5 x 24.5 x 5.5 in. (77.5 x 62.2 x 14 cm)InscriptionsFront has text "COACH DON FLETCHER 1939-1960 / Undefeated; 1945, 46, 47, 57 / WPIAL champs 1946 & 1947 / Donated by Friends and Players".
Historical NotesFoundry maquette for a bronze plaque honoring WPIAL coach Don Fletcher. This plaster cast was given to Don Fletcher at the time a commemorative bronze plaque was made. Fletcher coached the New Kensington High School Red Raiders form 1939-1960, including the period 1945-48, when Willie Thrower played there. Thrower went on to become the first African-American quarterback in the National Football League.
