Historical NotesThis embroidered piece was cut from a religious vestment or banner that belonged to the donor's great-uncle, Father Adelbert Kazincy. It documents Kazincy's life and illustrates the ties between religion, ethnicity, and society in the region. Kazincy came to Western Pennsylvania from Hungary, finishing his theological training at St. Vincent's Seminary in Latrobe. He was ordained in Scranton in 1894, and served at two parishes before arriving at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Braddock in 1896. A staunch supporter of his Slavic steelworker constituents during the Great Steel Strike of 1919, he testified on their behalf before a Senate Committee. Known for his passionate character, generosity and dedication to the largely immigrant parish, Kazincy served at St. Michael's until his death in 1947.Label TextAn immigrant from Hungary, Father Adelbert Kazincy was a staunch supporter of his Slavic steelworker constituents during the Steel Strike of 1919. Decorated with symbolic Catholic motifs of ivy and holly, these vestments likely commemorated the 25th anniversary of his 1894 ordination. Coincidentally, the vestments also reflect the year of the steel strike in which he played an important role.
