Historical NotesDwight White (born July 30, 1949) was an American football player who played defensive end with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1971-1980 and was a member of the famed Steel Curtain defense. White was nicknamed "Mad Dog" White; he was one of the game's more colorful characters, and was by far the most vocal player on the Steelers defense. White was also a standout defensive end who played with much intensity, which earned him a spot on the Pro Bowl team. Prior to Super Bowl IX, White spent much of the previous week in a hospital, suffering from pneumonia. As a result, he lost 20 pounds and was not expected to play. However, he did play, and accounted for the only scoring in the first half when he sacked Fran Tarkenton in the end zone for a safety, the first points in Steelers' history in a championship game. The Steelers defeated the Minnesota Vikings 16-6. White retired after the 1980 season.
