Historical NotesGreg Hopkins Los Angeles Avengers bobblehead doll. As a two-sport athlete at Waynesburg High, and later, Slippery Rock University, Greg Hopkins shined in both football and wrestling. Hopkins, who collected two letters in wrestling, remains Slippery Rock's all time leader in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns. After graduating from college he enjoyed great success in the Arena Football League. His professional football career spanned eleven years (1994-2005) and his last five years were spent playing with the Los Angeles Avengers. During his stellar career, in 2001 he was chosen as Ironman of the Year, the League's most prestigious honor. He was elected as one of the top twenty players in League history and his number, 82, was retired in 2007 and hangs permanently in Staples Center in Los Angeles. Greg also played a huge role in forming the Arena Football Players Union. He served as an executive board member and worked to set minimum salary requirements for all AFL players. The L.A. Avengers AFL team was started in 2000 and folded in April 2009 due to lack of funding.
