DescriptionField desk. Inside has: two vertical rectangular openings, eight smaller square openings, and two openings at top, and one opening has a removable drawer. Metal chains on both inner sides for connecting front wooden door and a metal hook on the outer right side. Front wooden door features a multi-colored image of a Union Civil War soldier riding a brown horse in battle beneath an oval glass wooden frame. A torn calendar is glued to bottom of glass. Historical NotesA Civil War field desk used by Captain Hugh A. Ayers of Butler, Pennsylvania while he was commanding officer of Company H, 78th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, Infantry. The regiment fought in the battles of Stone River, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, and other actions in the campaigns of the Army of the Cumberland. Several years after the war, Ayers presented the desk to donor Harry L. Richey's father, Abraham Brinker Richey, who had served under his command. Ayers died in 1910.
