Historical NotesOil painting of an unknown woman by Austin C. Wooster. Wooster (1838-1916) was a painter from Western Pennsylvania who specialized in still life, portraits, and landscapes. He was born in Chartiers Valley and was raised by his grandparents, who discouraged his painting. Following the Civil War he settled in Greentree with his family. He had a studio in Pittsburgh at Fourth Avenue and Wood Street. No records have been found regarding Wooster's art training. Wooster appears to have been greatly influenced by the style of A. F. King, a local artist of the same time period, though it is not known if he actually studied under King.
