Historical NotesAgricultural award ribbon from Dixmont Hospital. The ribbon was awarded by the Pennsylvania Department of Welfare for agricultural production at the hospital. Dixmont opened in 1859 and was named after social reformer Dorothea Dix, who advocated for proper care and treatment for the mentally insane. During the latter half of the 1900s, state funding and a lack of nursing made conditions deplorable and the hospital closed in 1984.
