DescriptionColorless glass pitcher. Reproduction of McKee Brothers' Bellflower pattern, also known as Ribbed Leaf pattern or Ribbed Bellflower pattern. Pitcher with a cylindrical body that tapers into a neck and pouring spout. Design consists of a single vine undulating horizontally through the middle of the pitcher, with 2 bellflowers, 2 shamrock-shaped leaves above and below the main vine. The background is ribbed and extends almost to the pouring spout. Ribbing is on the front of the pitcher only, the inside is smooth. The base is clear and smooth and has a 1.25" footring/resting point and a very slightly concave, 1-inch shallow basal surface; with maker's mark on footring. The spout flares and tapers at the end. Applied handle. Has a slightly blue cast.Dimensions7.25 x 4 x 7.5 in. (18.4 x 10.2 x 19.1 cm)Marks"MMA", located on base of pitcher.
Historical NotesIn the 1970s the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City contracted with Imperial Glass Company to produce reproduction glass pieces for its gift catalog. This is probably one of those pieces. Part of a collection of regionally-produced pattern or pressed glass collected by donor George F. Huff's wife, Sue Huff, a member of the Pittsburgh chapter of the National American Glass Club. The collection features two patterns, Bryce Brothers, pattern #125 “Rose in Snow” and the “Bellflower” pattern. The variety in form of these two patterns serves as an important addition to our pressed glass collection.
