Historical NotesThe Catleya Award began in 2005 by the group Colombia en Pittsburgh to commemorate Western Pennsylvanians doing significant work in the Latino Community both in Pittsburgh and the world. The award is given out every year at the celebratory event for Colombian independence held in Pittsburgh. Past recipients include Dr. Juan Carlos Puyana, a surgeon at UPMC; Dr. Robert D. Drennan, a professor at the University of Pittsburgh who has done pioneering work in Colombian anthropology; Dr. Diego Chaves-Gnecco for the creation of the Salud para Ninos clinic; and Dr. Richard Spear for his fundraising efforts aimed at providing education and care for impoverished children in Cali, Colombia. Label TextSince 2005 the group Colombia en Pittsburgh has awarded the Silver Catleya to a local individual who has contributed to the betterment of Latin America and our region. The group chose the catleya because it is the national flower of Colombia. Recipients of this honor include Dr. Juan Carlos Puyana (2009) and Dr. Diego Chaves-Gnecco (2006) for their contributions to the medical profession in the region. Dr. Robert D. Drennon (2007) was recognized for his contributions to anthropology. The first recipient, Richard Spear (2005), received the honor for his years of fundraising for impoverished children in Colombia.
