Historical NotesPart of a collection related to the Chiodo family and the Chiodo Tavern. Joe Chiodo came with his family to Homestead in 1927 at the age of 10 from Calabria, Italy. Chiodo helped his father in his cobbler business and then served in WWII. When he got back from the war, the family decided to purchase a new building for the shop at 107 W. Eighth Avenue in Homestead. The building had been a bar so they kept running it as a bar and the continued to do so until Joe retired and sold the building in 2005. Over the years, memorabilia from Joe’s time in WWII, local mills, etc., filled the walls and ceiling of the bar. These items were left in Joe’s house after he passed and were donated on behalf of his wife Florence.
