Historical NotesThis lithograph depicts burning of the Union Depot during the Pittsburgh railroad strike of 1877. A list of those killed is included at the bottom. Label TextWhen railroad wages were cut in the summer of 1877, trains across the U.S. stopped running. The country’s first national strike ignited. A riot ensued when striking railroad workers in Pittsburgh were joined by iron and steel workers, miners, and even some business owners—all frustrated with the railroad’s hold over the city
