MarksBack of medal has inscribed maker's mark at bottom of bird head above "D&C" above "G.F" above "DIEGES&CLUST".
Historical NotesThis medal was awarded to Helen MacCloskey Rough. Manus MacCloskey immigrated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from Dungiven, Ireland, sometime in the 1840s. He worked on the river as a riverboat man, delivering coal from Pittsburgh to New Orleans prior to the Civil War. His grandson, James Edward MacCloskey, Jr., married Helen Irwin and they had two daughters. One of their daughters, Helen MacCloskey Rough, was an aviatrix.
