DescriptionCream-colored long-sleeve cotton smock. Machine stitched. V-neck with hip pocket at proper right side. Rectangular Red Cross patch sewn at bottom of neckline. Three mother of pearl buttons up back, from waist to back of neck.Dimensions15 x 49.5 in. (38.1 x 125.7 cm)Historical NotesThis American Red Cross smock was worn by Margaret McMillen Garwood. Margaret McMillen Garwood obtained a degree from Wilson College in the early 1900s. Margaret was a social worker and worked at community centers in Lawrenceville and the Hill District and also served in the Red Cross. Her husband, Clyde Garwood, became principal of Homewood Schools in 1909 and Associated Superintendent of North Side Pittsburgh in 1914. From December 1919 to June of 1920, the Garwoods lived in Paris because he was appointed European Director of the Junior American Red Cross.
