Historical NotesPaperweight featuring an advertisement for Chautauqua Lake Ice Company, which was later known as Consolidated Ice Company. The Consolidated Ice Company was the first company in Pittsburgh to manufacture ice. Its original name was the Chautauqua Lake Ice Company. The company made ice, rather than shipping it down river from upstate New York, and storing it for sale. The company had gigantic freezing tanks, storage areas and wagon sheds on site. In February of 1898, the building caught on fire--several people inside and in the surrounding buildings were killed or injured. Today, the Heinz History Center is located inside what remained of the old Chautauqua Lake Ice Company building.
