Historical NotesJersey worn by Shavonte Zellous, Senior guard for the Pitt Panthers basketball team. She led Pitt to four consecutive postseason bids and two consecutive Sweet 16s. Zellous, from Orlando, Fla., as of 2009, was the third-leading scorer on the defending champion Detroit Shock (10.6 points per game) and was averaging 2.3 rebounds and an assist as well. She was drafted in the first round of the 2009 draft (11th overall), becoming the first Pitt player drafted by a WNBA team. She is second in the WNBA in scoring among rookies and second among rookies in free-throws made (83) and attempted (92). She is first among rookies (among those who qualify based on the minimum number of attempts) in free-throw percentage (.902). During the summer of 2009, he was chosen 36th overall in the NBA draft to play for the Memphis Grizzlies. Part of a collection that documents the University of Pittsburgh's men's and women's basketball teams during the 2008-2009 season, a banner year for basketball at the school. Under the leadership of Coach Agnus Berenato the women's team also had great success playing to a school-record 25-8 overall record and earning their best-ever Big East record of 12-4. Pitt advanced to its second consecutive Sweet 16 appearance and finished the season with a Number 15 ranking, which ties the highest ranking in school history. Shavonte Zellous broke numerous school records and became Pitt’s first-ever women’s All-American with Associated Press third team honors, and the program’s first-ever WNBA draft pick when she was selected at No. 11 by the Detroit Shock.
