(5.1 x 12.1 x 10.5 cm)Historical NotesGlass ashtray made by the U.S. Glass Company of Glassport. This is a good example of the kinds of items made at the Glassport facility, which produced bar goods, stemware, high-grade tableware, and also specialty items. U.S. Glass Company formed in 1891 with a conglomeration of 15 glass producers in the Pittsburgh area. In 1893, U.S. Glass purchased about 500 acres along the Monongahela River near McKeesport for another glass plant; as a result, the community of Glassport grew up around it. The Glassport facility operated through the Depression--one of only five to stay in operation in Pittsburgh--and continued until a tornado destroyed the plant in 1963.
